Just as our gut has live bacteria — AKA ‘microbes’— so does our scalp. With its own unique ecosystem, the scalp is host to a range of microbes (from bacteria and fungi through to environmental toxins) that live on the scalp’s surface and feed on sebum (your hair’s natural oil). A balanced scalp microbiome is one where diverse bacteria work together as a team to strengthen the skin’s surface layer and create a habitat for follicles to thrive and roots to grow into healthy Straands.

No two Straands of hair are the same, which means no two scalp microbiomes will balance out in the same way or at the same time. As a rule of thumb, we suggest adding scalp care into your beauty routine, stat! By massaging your scalp (from the scalp to roots and strands) with The Crown Cleanse, two to three times a week (completing a two-step rinse and repeat cycle), healthy hair and a balanced biome will be at your fingertips in no time.

Flaky scalp? That’s your microbiome waving a red flag. Dandruff is caused by an imbalance in the scalp’s microbiome, often due to an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia. This fungus feeds on the natural oils (sebum) on your scalp, breaking them down into fatty acids that can cause irritation in some people. The result? Flaking, itchiness, and scalp inflammation.

Other factors that contribute to dandruff flare-ups include stress, seasonal changes, product buildup, and water temperature. High stress levels can weaken your immune system, making your scalp more susceptible to irritation. Cold, dry air in winter or increased humidity in summer can disrupt scalp balance. Heavy styling products and infrequent washing can trap oil, dead skin, and yeast, leading to buildup. Even the temperature of your shower can make a difference—hot water can strip the scalp of essential moisture, triggering dryness and flaking.

Nope! But we do recommend using at least 2–3 steps together for the best results (think: pre-wash + shampoo + serum). Every product is effective on its own, but they’re designed to be even more powerful as a team.
